Before going to portrait group I painted my canvas these forms, approximating the 3 location of each portrait of Sheila
-
-
-
I’ve come a long way,… but, well, I feel like cutting the painting into 3 individual portraits at this stage….
-
-
..nearly there
-
-
…..finished,…maybe…perhaps I need to accept the organised sloppiness..I may come back to this and the others later..
-
-
This is a very hard hitting image….
-
-
…more brushstrokes…more detail..emotional impact still there…but would you want it in the living room?..It’s just as well I only have to please myself…but i would Like this to be a piece that the sitter would be happy to have in her home all the same..
-
-
Ive started adding blue to an otherwise quite realistic ……
-
-
….and I’ve….realised that I have many more strokes before i will feel that I have done justice to this portrait….no, not a happy vegemiter with this effort.I may revisit the entire work at a much later date, as I feel quite critical of it right now..

This piece of artwork is more typical of the standard I’m capable of…..I dont have a single style and that is not my aim or journey….My focus is psychological insight into my sitter…whatever the style or form of the artwork!

This is where I started ..with my A4 folio book No 44..sitting with a group of about 10 people at desks in front of the “sitter” about to draw in graphite (lead pencil).
-
-
…….the first 20 minutes….yes seriously after proportions here
-
-
….Wallllah…..yes very satisfied with this effort using 2b ( 0.5 and 0.9 clutch pencil plus 6B graphite block and kneedable rubber).

Colin sat for us with hat and without for 3 x two hour sessions (over 3 Tuesday mornings in September)
-
-
…..quite good..and have remodelled his nose since (just a little)
-
-
Before the 2nd session I planned a portrait design and colour concept ,working from photos from the previous session..The next 2 images reveal my progress beforeI entered the studio for week 2 to start.
-
-
this piece started falling into place quickly
-
-
This one is flowing so easily…….

Although I have a photo from the previous week…,I am now seated at an easle in the approximate location, though a little further away (with the other easle people )..Most of this painting you see here was carried out in the 2hour session..I detailed the eye at home..The top hat shape works for the design of the painting and is not true to the shape of Colin’s head…I may add a little cream to the base where the “top” meets the “brim”…Hmmm maybe.. but overall I am very proud othis work of art. Colin loved it and i have promised it to him.

at the easle again…working on A2 size 200gsm cartridge paper this pastel came to life with little effort.

John P feeding a baby (doll)… I create a theme for the life drawing groups that I coordinate..and have found that the fellow artists at the GAS and models have found this idea stimulating for the session as well as adding ideas as to evolving new pieces of artwork.

Initial sketching in grey lead, then in paint on a 600 x 1200 canvas covered framed masonite backing… (print from the op-shop).!

-
During the 3 sessions she sat I drew 2 graphite images and one in pastel.
-
-
This drawing was completed in one session…the above represents the first 10 minutes effort

-
Her presence radiated warmth, wisdom and humility….( A2 size cartridge paper 200 gsm using 2B pencil and 6B graphite block)

profile in my folio 44 A4 sized book…Just loved the contrasting texture of hair and skin. She was keen to have a print of the drawing (not shown) of my week 1 effort. This I delivered to her some weeks later ..I will later give her a choice of the originals..
